How do I calculate my contents sum insured?

Contents insurance covers household goods, furniture and furnishings and your personal effects possessions, all the things you would normally take with you when you move house. Contents could include curtains, carpets, lights, domestic appliances, furniture, prints, paintings, sound and vision equipment, household linen, kitchen equipment etc. For a full definition please refer to the policy wordings. Therefore when calculating the sum insured you should make a list of everything in each room of the property (including garages and sheds) and use the amount each item would cost “as new” to replace for the basis of your calculation.

Note: If you select our Prestige Home or Ultra Home cover, items such as jewellery, watches and furs are defined as personal possessions and will need to be insured under the part of the policy that is designed specifically to cover personal possessions

If you take the Principal Home cover, contents insurance provides some cover for  personal possessions. There is a limit of £500 in value for any single pedal cycle or £5,000 for any other single item though. Any items you need to insure which exceed these limits can be insured separately under the part of the policy which is designed to specifically cover personal possessions.
