Try the following care tips:

•    Insulate your loft or consider • topping up any existing insulation - you will also save on energy bills!
•    Lag all pipes in your loft space and • also anywhere else that might be prone to freeze.
•    Insulate the top and sides of water • tanks but apart from central heating header tanks raised above the level of joists, don’t insulate them underneath as you will prevent warm air rising from rooms below helping to keep them warm.
•    Open the loft trap door on cold • days to let heat in.
•    If you’re away for awhile, spending • winter somewhere warmer perhaps, then ask a friend or relative to check on your home on a regular basis during this period. If you do suffer a burst pipe it will be detected sooner which could help to minimise any damage.
•    Make sure you know where your • stopcock is and check regularly that you can turn it off easily in an emergency. It’s handy to label it so you remember where it is in a panic.
•    If you are going to be away for a • while you should also leave your central heating set to at least 10 degrees centigrade. Alternatively turn the water off and drain your tanks and pipes - it is important to do this to ensure that you are covered as it is a condition under all our home policies.
•    Repair any dripping taps because • if they freeze they’ll block the pipe. This will also help you save up to a litre of water a day.

For added peace of mind, we urge you to keep the claims helpline 0844 893 8360 (Mon – Fri, 9 – 5pm) and 0845 070 1228 (out of hours) in a handy place if you do fall victim to a burst water pipe.
