Home & Legacy's winter protection tips

Posted on: 16 December 2013

With Christmas celebrations just around the corner, it is understandable for us to get caught up in the festivities. However, many homeowners forget to take the usual precautions over the winter to keep their families and homes safe.

theft prevention

Homes may be left empty whilst the family attend Christmas parties or fly away in search of the sun or snow and burglars can take advantage in search of expensive gifts. Here are Home & Legacy’s top tips to outsmart burglars this festive season:

  • Set lights on a timer
  • Ask a neighbour to empty your post-box, or check the home while you are away
  • Don’t leave presents or discarded packaging on display
  • Lock all windows and doors, set the alarm if there is one
  • Be vigilant to bogus callers – verify their ID before allowing entry
  • Don’t advertise your home is unoccupied on social media, such as Facebook or Twitter

Remember all Home & Legacy policies provide cover for New Acquisitions* allowing you time to make us aware of new purchases.

escape of water

During winter, as temperatures plummet, water in pipes can freeze – sometimes causing very extensive damage. To help prevent this happening we suggest that you follow these simple steps:

  • Maintain heating whilst away from the home
  • Ensure that your pipes are insulated
  • Leave any loft hatches open to allow warm air to circulate
fire prevention

At this time of year, we all want to make the most of Christmas. Please take the following precautions to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable time:

  • Keep Christmas trees away from flames and heat sources
  • Replace old fairy lights and don’t leave them on for long periods of time
  • Avoid leaving candles, tea-lights or other naked flames unattended
  • Check smoke alarms are working
extreme weather

The UK has seen it’s fair share of storm and flood damage recently and it is likely that there is more to come. If adverse weather is forecast you may wish to consider the following:

  • Flooding – If you are in an area at risk of flooding, we recommend that you visit the Environment Agency website for guidance
  • High Winds/Storms – Secure garden furniture and ensure gutters, drains etc are free of debris
